Soul Songs: Inspiring Women of KlezmerPhiladelphia Folklore Project

October 28, 2018  ·  Zellerbach Theatre  ·  Guest Events

World Premiere/One-Night-Only

Twelve extraordinary women composer-performers join together on stage for a concert of dynamic, innovative klezmer music. These women’s original soul songs breathe contemporary life into this centuries-old tradition of Eastern European Jewish folk music. Their works forge new gateways into klezmer’s future.

Fourth generation klezmer musician and concert artistic director Susan Watts -- trumpeter and vocalist -- hosts violinists Cookie Segelstein, Deborah Strauss, and Alicia Svigals, pianist Marilyn Lerner, clarinetists Zoe Christiansen and Ilene Stahl, trombonist Rachel Lemisch, accordionist Lauren Brody, flute player Adrianne Greenbaum, bassist Joanna Sternberg, and drummer Lorie Wolf for this unique event. These inspiring women enlighten and entertain the audience with anecdotes and original approaches to creativity within the distinct framework of this beloved musical form.

Major support for Soul Songs has been provided to the Philadelphia Folklore Project by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.
