DanceBrazil
| March 22 – 24 For more than 30 years, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences throughout the world with a dazzling fusion of Afro-Brazilian culture, contemporary dance and Capoeira, the African dance/martial arts form that evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement. Enjoy the Philadelphia premiere of Batuke, a hard-driving piece exploding with the rhythms created by smooth samba steps, capoeira lethal kicks and the stick dance Maculel, followed by the world premiere of Imfazwe, a piece exploring Capoeira as an art form. Under the direction of Artistic Director Jelon Vieira, DanceBrazil will wow audiences with its "crowd-pleasing style of high-octane, high-flying, pelvis swiveling choreography" (New York Times) and its colorful costumes, acrobatic virtuosity and soul-stirring rhythms. |
