Love Songs (2006) is a series of playful duets that explore the various stages of love, set to music by Roy Orbison, Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone. Constructed in three parts, Love Songs showcases Keigwins innate ability to create duets that accurately portray the complex dynamics of relationships. As hailed by The New York Times, Mr. Keigwins language, a rich mixture of gesture and invented movement, hovers between the abstract and the literal.
Mattress Suite (2003), a signature Keigwin work, is comprised of six individual pieces performed as solos and duets. Set to music ranging from classical to contemporary, the choreography explores love, life and the search for self. Clad in white underwear, the dancers stay on and around a mattress which serves as a set, prop and focal point for choreographic exploration, drawing the audience into intimate scenarios.
Set to a pulsing electronic score, Triptych (2009) is an abstract full-ensemble work thats based on classic photography triptychs. The piece explores concepts of duration, repetition and pattern while highlighting the technical prowess and unique personalities of each dancer. Deborah Jowitt of The Village Voice exclaims, One of Keigwins greatest gifts is for revealing the individuality of his champion dances. He lets you see them, he allows you to love them.
The tongue-in-cheek piece Girls (2013) was created as a counterpart to Keigwins previous creation Boys (2012). Set to a Frank Sinatra medley, Girls features a trio of female dancers playfully weaving in and out of four different colored rain curtains. The choreography combines individual solo moments with intricate and challenging unison sections that radiate pure delight.
KEIGWIN + COMPANY made its Dance Celebration debut in 10/11 season with its full length work, Elements. Randy Swartz, Artistic Director of Dance Celebration, notes that Larry Keigwin has established himself as a major new talent, and we are delighted to share work that has not been presented in Philadelphia.
