Critically acclaimed jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton launches the Annenberg Centers 13/14 jazz series
(Philadelphia, August 27, 2013)Seven-time Grammy® Award-winning jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton commences the 13/14 jazz series at the Annenberg Center with a joyful birthday celebration. Hailed as an innovative musical giant that makes jazz one of the gifts from God (Jazz Weekly), Gary Burton is internationally recognized for his iconic jazz-rock sound and prodigious 50-plus-year career. Burton will be joined by Julian Lage on guitar, Antonio Sanchez on drums and Scott Colley on bass, together known as the Gary Burton Quartet. This performance will take place on Sunday, October 6 at 7 PM. Tickets are $20-$55 (prices are subject to change). Dazzling, virtuosic, and fresh (New York Times), Gary Burton is heralded as an innovator for developing a pianistic style of four-mallet vibraphone technique as opposed to the prevailing two-mallet technique. Burton is also known for pioneering the fusion jazz genre and popularizing the duet format in jazz. Collaborating with acclaimed musicians such as Chick Corea and Pat Metheny, Burton has garnered seven Grammy® Awards, including one for his 1971 solo album Alone at Last.
In addition to performing, Gary Burton is an accomplished music educator, serving as the percussion and improvisation teacher, Dean of Curriculum and Executive Vice President of Berklee College of Music for 33 years, before retiring in 2003. Burtons most recent album Guided Tour with the New Gary Burton Quartet is comprised of original material from all of the groups members, highlighting their wide range of cross-cultural musical styles.
For this engagement, Burton will be joined by Julian Lage on guitar, Antonio Sanchez on drums and Scott Colley on bass.
Grammy® nominated guitarist Julian Lage is praised by All About Jazz as a giant in the making. Lage gained pivotal exposure as a protégé of Gary Burton, recording and performing with him on numerous projects. Lages 2009 solo debut Sounding Point earned him a Grammy® nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. His album Gladwell released in April 2011 to positive reviews.
Antonio Sanchez is one of the most internationally in-demand jazz drummers. A three-time Grammy® Award winner, Sanchez regularly records and performs alongside highly regarded musicians such as Chick Corea, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Joshua Redman and Gary Burton. Sanchez's latest release, Live in New York at Jazz Standard, features David Sanchez, Miguel Zenon and Scott Colley.
Appearing on more than 200 albums to date, Scott Colley is the bassist of choice for such jazz legends as Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Andrew Hill and Michael Brecker. Colley is also a critically acclaimed composer and bandleader, who has been featured on numerous jazz albums including seven albums with his own quartet and trio, including the 2010 release Empire.
